Michigan State Grad Wins NOW's Annual Love Your Body Day Poster ContestMay 21, 2003 by NOW Staff
Love Your Body Day is NOW's national day of action to speak out against ads and images of women that are offensive, harmful, dangerous, and disrespectful. Black, who recently graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in graphic design and photography, said she entered the annual design contest because it solicited creative responses to the onslaught of negative images that impact women's health and self-image. "I was drawn to the Love Your Body Day competition because it was an opportunity to create a poster for a cause I really believe in and that will hopefully benefit many girls and women," Black said. "The idea for the poster came from a desire to address the issues in a positive way rather than simply illustrating them." In addition to winning a $600 grand prize award and a $400 prize award for undergraduate and graduate students, Black's poster designwhich compares the price of beauty and fashion products with the costs of groceries, college tuition and travelwill be reproduced as the official 2003 Love Your Body Campaign Poster and distributed nationwide, featured on the NOW Foundation web site, and exhibited at the 2003 National NOW Conference in July. Other winning posters were designed and submitted by Jennifer Mangini of Waltham, Mass., who won the $400 prize in the open competition category, and Mehek Fatima of Houston, Texas, who won the $200 prize in the high school category.
